Athlete Instructions:
April Indoor/Outdoor Triathlon

Since the Indoor/Outdoor format of the April triathlon may be unique to many athletes, please review the following information regarding the race.

Format

·         400 yard pool swim (8 laps)

·         8 mile pedal on spin bikes, which will be in the LakeView Studio

·         2.3 mile run around Lake Andrea (paved path)

·         Note this is a distance based event, not timed like in January & March

·         Transition time will count in this race, including time to set up the bike.

·         You will be body marked and wear your race number on the bike and run.

·         The decision whether we can race outside will be made by at 6:45 on race morning.  We expect to be outside unless the weather is very bad – extreme cold, lightening, etc.

·         If we cannot race outdoors, the race will become a timed event just like the previous indoor triathlons (10 minute swim, 10 minute transition, 20 minute bike, 5 minute transition, 15 minute treadmill run).

·         SO, you must be prepared to race outdoors or indoors!

What you will want to bring

·         Standard tri clothing.  Shirt/singlet is required for both men and women – no bare torsos.  Remember to be prepared to run outside, which could mean jacket, hat, gloves, sunscreen, sunglasses, etc.  You will also need to wear a race number.  Safety pins will be provided or you may bring a race belt.

·         Lock for lockers if you choose to use the locker room during or after the race.

·         Swim caps are optional and are not provided.

·         Towels – the RecPlex does not provide towels.  Please bring a towel to dry off after the swim (T1) and if you want to take a shower afterward.  We also recommend you bring a small towel for the bike if you sweat profusely.

·         Bike Shoes are optional, and must be SPD compatible.  The spin bikes have dual pedals, with a standard “cage” on one side and SPD cleat on the other.  Remember though that transition time does count when deciding whether to bring bike and running shoes.

o   Important: if you wear bike shoes, they cannot be left by the spin bikes during your run.  Either return them to the transition area or put them under the benches in the Lakeview Studio.

·         All waves start on time.  It is your responsibility to be in position and ready to go at your start time.

·         If you miss your wave start, you will not be allowed to begin the race.  No exceptions.

Race Day

·         Check-in starts at 6:30.  Everyone must check-in no later than 30 minutes before their wave starts.  Check-in will be in the hall by the racquetball courts, on the first floor (not upstairs in the Fitness Center like January and March).

·         You must be marked with your race number, in order to be scored.

·         You must wear your race number on the front of your body on run portion of the course.  This means your race number must be worn and visible when you exit T2.

·         The first wave starts at 7:00am and every 25 minutes thereafter.

·         Transition will be in the Starfish room, next to the pool.

·         Do not leave any valuables in the transition area.  The RecPlex is not responsive for lost or stolen items – please lock up valuables in the locker rooms.

·         You have the option of transitioning in the locker rooms (Family Changing Room, which is closest to the pool, or the Men’s or Women’s locker rooms).  Please bring your own lock and towel.

Swim

·         8 laps, two swimmers per lane, four lanes.  You will have a maximum of 20 minutes to swim the 400 yards.  Anyone still in the pool at their 20 minute mark will be removed and given a 5 minute time penalty.

o   Choose right or left side and swim straight down and back – not a circle.  Make sure your scorer knows your full name and whether you are left or right side.

o   Scorers will put a kickboard on the edge of your side of the lane when you on the last lap.

o   Athletes are responsible for counting their own laps (400 yards = 8 laps = 16 lengths) and exiting the water at the correct distance.  Confirm your distance with the scorer before you leave the pool. (Lap = down and back [50 yards], Length = just down, or just back [25 yards])

·         Transition 1:  exit the pool to the Starfish room.  After changing, exit out the hall door, and down the hall to the LakeView Studio, where the spin bikes will be located.

Bike

·         Volunteers will direct you to an open bike.  After pedaling for 8 miles, notify a volunteer and do not get off the bike until they confirm the distance and mark your time.  We strongly recommend you bring a water bottle for the bike.

o   To prevent possible injury, you should set a minimal resistance on the bikes.  Do not “free spin” for the entire 8 miles.

·         Transition 2:  Exit out the door of the LakeView Studio and follow the driveway to the lakefront path.  If necessary to change, return to the Starfish room the same way you came to the bikes – watch for athletes coming in for Transition 1!  After changing, exit back outside from the LakeView Studio.

Run

·         You will run clockwise around Lake Andrea; when reaching the path, turn left and begin running toward the RecPlex parking lot.

·         Note that the path is not closed for this event, so you must watch out for walkers, bikes, other runners, etc.  Common running courtesy is expected.  Aggressive behavior toward other users of the path will result in disqualification without appeal.

·         A water station will be immediately outside the LakeView Studio.

Post-Race

·         When you have finished the race, please re-enter the LakeView Studio by the same door where you exited for the run.  Watch out for athletes exiting who are still racing!

·         Goodie bags, t-shirts, finishers medals, and refreshments will be available in the LakeView Studio.

·         Awards will be presented after all participants have finished and results are final.

o   Results will be by overall race time.  The official times will be wave start and athlete finish.

o   Since the race is manually scored, splits may or may not be available (depending on the number of volunteers).

o   Interim results will be posted during the race but are not official until all athletes have finished.

o   Official results will be posted at the RecPlex and online at www.3-fitness.com (click the Tri Results link) by Sunday evening.

o   If you are not present for awards (plaques and certificates), they may be picked up later at the RecPlex Fitness Desk.

o   We will also award the male and female Tri Championship winners after the April race results are final.

·         Raffle – you must be present to win.

Have Fun, but Be Safe!
